Michael Keane says Everton fully-merited their point at newly-promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers – and the Blues could consider themselves unfortunate not to claim a maximum return.

Marco Silva's energetic and competitive team had dampened the enthusiasm of a vocal Molineux crowd with a controlled display and led 1-0 when captain Phil Jagielka was dismissed four minutes before half-time.

Ruben Neves blasted in the resulting free-kick to level Richarlison’s confidently-taken 17th-minute opener.

Centre-half Keane had a new defensive partner following Jagielka’s red card, with Silva sending on Mason Holgate in place on Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Everton defended resolutely and continued to carry a substantial threat in attack, the Toffees’ ambition rewarded when Richarlison skipped into the box to put his side back in front.

But Raul Jimenez headed in Neves’ deep cross on 79 minutes to earn the hosts a draw.

Both sides had chances to add to their goal tallies in a frantic and evenly-contested second half. Jordan Pickford spread himself to save one-one-one from Jimenez's thumping strike. For the visitors, Seamus Coleman's delivery from the right in the closing minutes narrowly evaded the advancing Oumar Niasse in the middle of the box.

Everton had been left a man down when referee Craig Pawson sent off captain Jagielka following a challenge on Diogo Jota at the edge of the box.

“I think once we got the man sent off, if you had offered us a draw we might have taken it,” said Keane.

“But it was a shame we could not hang on after going back in front. I thought we dug in really well. To a man we worked really hard and on another day would have come away with three points.

“But you could not fault the lads for effort. We dug in and the draw was the least we deserved.”

Richarlison’s brilliance grabbed the headlines but Keane admitted the Brazilian’s teammates were not surprised by his sparkling debut.

The-21-year-old came to English football only 12 months ago when Everton boss Silva took him to Watford from Rio de Janeiro side Fluminense.

He exploded onto the scene with a series of captivating displays for the Vicarage Road club and scored five goals – as well as assisting three – in his first 11 Premier League starts.

Richarlison arrived at Goodison Park refreshed following his first proper break for two years and Keane revealed the attacker had impressed from the minute he walked in the door.

“Richarlison came up with a brilliant second goal… but we have seen him doing that sort of thing regularly in training,” added Keane.

"He has shown us what he is capable of and his second goal was the result of his direct play. He is a massive goal threat and showed that at the start of last season. He has started the same way for Everton and hopefully he can carry on producing performances of that quality.”
