Bernard: Blues' Tradition And Boss Silva Key To Everton Move

Bernard says the chance to join a “great club with great tradition” and the influential words of Marco Silva convinced him to sign a four-year contract with Everton to the end of June 2022.

The gifted Brazil attacker won three league championships and three Ukranian Cups in five seasons with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Capped 14 times by his country, the 25-year-old is equally comfortable playing on either wing or operating as an advanced midfield player and he has vowed to help “make things happen for Everton” as he looks forward to working with manager Silva.

“I chose Everton because of all the things I had heard about Marco Silva and after speaking to him I was happy with what he said to me,” Bernard told evertontv.

“The manager made me feel confident about playing here. He is a very good coach and he has achieved really good things at other clubs.

“Everton is a club with a great structure and a lot of tradition, historically the fourth most successful club in England. When I found out about this opportunity and what the manager wanted out of me I was happy.

“That is why I made my choice, because of the confidence both the manager and the Club showed in me.

“I did not need any convincing to come here. I believe I will be able to show my best as a player here."

Manager Silva said: “Bernard is a quick player, very good technically and he can play on the left or right wings and as an offensive midfield player behind the striker.

“He has experience of playing in the Champions League for Shakhtar Donetsk for the past five years and the fact he has 14 caps for Brazil is a further reflection of his quality.”

Bernard started his career with Belo Horizonte side Atletico Mineiro and helped inspire his hometown club to their solitary Copa Libertadores title in 2013.

He won the first of his 14 Brazil caps against Argentina in November 2012 to crown a year when he was named his country’s best emerging talent.

Shakhtar beat a host of rivals to sign the talented forward immediately after his Copa Libertadores exploits with Atletico.

Bernard won the league title in his first season with Shakhtar before representing Brazil as they reached the semi-finals of their home World Cup in 2014.

He helped Shakhtar reach the semi-finals of the Europa League in 2015-16 and was one of the driving forces behind the club securing successive domestic league and cup doubles in his final two seasons in Ukraine.

“I can promise I will try my hardest and dedicate myself to my work and to trying to make things happen for Everton,” added Bernard.

“This is an ambitious club which is aiming to achieve real success with Marco Silva’s ideas and the new players coming in.”
