What The Papers Say - July 12

Thursday’s local and national papers are dominated by England’s extra-time defeat by Croatia in the World Cup semi-final.

Despite the Three Lions’ exit, Jordan Pickford again impressed and the London Evening Standard carries quotes from the Everton stopper, who said: "I feel that as a nation we have progressed and hopefully there is more to come in the future."

Pickford’s display against Croatia was praised by Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp in the Daily Mail, who reflected on his “excellent performance to keep England in the game for so long”.

Redknapp added: “He has been the best goalkeeper at this World Cup. His distribution was superb, made some very good saves — including from Mario Mandzukic in extra-time — and kept calm when Croatia started to press high."

The Daily Mirror continues to link the Blues with a move for Colombia centre-back Yerry Mina.

The paper speculates the 21-year-old Barcelona defender – who scored three times in this summer’s World Cup – could cost £21 million.

The Northern Echo, meanwhile, reports Everton are “poised to step up their interest” in Newcastle United skipper Jamaal Lascelles.

The local read reports Magpies boss Rafael Benitez is determined to keep hold of the defender, however.
