Pickford Is The Hero As England Win World Cup Shootout

Everton’s Jordan Pickford is the toast of England after his penalty shootout heroics guided the Three Lions into the World Cup quarter-finals.

The Blues keeper showed his class with a stunning one-handed save to keep out Carlos Bacca’s spot-kick after Jordan Henderson had missed in the shootout in Moscow.

Pickford's save proved crucial in turning a nailbiting contest back in England’s favour as Eric Dier stepped up seconds later to slot home and book a last-eight date against Sweden on Saturday afternoon.

Pickford was desperately unlucky to be involved in a penalty shootout in the first place after his magnificent injury-time stop saw Everton’s 2017/18 player, players’ player and young player of the season turn Mateus Uribe’s 25-yard drive around the post.

With England defending a 1-0 lead courtesy of top-scorer Harry Kane’s 57th-minute penalty – his sixth goal of the World Cup – Colombia kept the tie going with an injury-time leveller from Yerry Mina.

Pickford, who once again caught the eye with his pinpoint distribution, was to have the final, though, as England won a penalty shootout in the World Cup for the first time in their history.

The Three Lions will now face Sweden in Samara on Saturday (3pm kick-off) for a place in the last four against either Croatia or Russia.
