What The Papers Say - 22 June

Ramiro Funes Mori’s transfer from Everton to Spanish side Villarreal dominates the Blues coverage in Friday’s newspapers.

The defender, 27, completed a switch to La Liga on Thursday evening after three seasons at Goodison Park.

Elsewhere, the Northern Echo claims Everton could move for Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson, and that the Toffees may be willing to let midfielder Mo Besic head in the opposite direction.

Bosnia international Besic spent the second half of last season on loan at the Riverside, making 17 appearances and scoring one goal.

The Daily Star believes Blues boss Marco Silva is interested in reuniting with Hull City forward Jarrod Bowen but that the Tigers will hold out for an offer in the region of £20million for the 21-year-old.

The Liverpool Echo reports Leighton Baines has returned to USM Finch Farm early in a bid to hit the ground running under Silva, with the paper also assessing how the Portuguese has made a positive habit of getting off to quick starts in his previous managerial roles.

Finally, the Daily Mail pays tribute to former Toffees player Ernie Hunt, who has died aged 75.

The 1960s Goodison striker is credited with inventing the so-called ‘donkey kick’ free-kick while playing for Coventry City in a game against Everton.

The effort stood and was named the BBC’s goal of the season for 1970/71, only for the move to later be outlawed by the game’s rule-makers.
