Everton 2-0 Newcastle United
Saturday, 7 May 2005

Everton went into their final home game of the 2004/05 campaign knowing victory would take them to within touching distance of securing a fourth-place Premier League finish – and Champions League qualification.

The Blues duly delivered a performance that embodied the resolve and unrelenting desire they had displayed throughout a remarkable season.

The Toffees came up against a talented Newcastle outfit but Graeme Souness’ men proved no match for an Everton side hell-bent on victory.

The first half looked set to end goalless, with Mikel Arteta having come closest for the Blues - his brilliant free-kick drawing a fine save from Newcastle keeper Shay Given.

But just two minutes before the half-time whistle was blown, the Toffees broke the deadlock.

When the breakthrough arrived, it came from an unlikely source - David Weir stooping to head home his first goal in three years.

After the break, Everton were firmly in the ascendency, with a rousing Goodison atmosphere driving the Blues on.

And after Shola Ameobi was sent off on 57 minutes after lashing out at Tim Cahill, the Australian soon put the hosts ahead.

Just two minutes after the striker was given his marching orders, Arteta’s shot fell into the path of Cahill, who finished expertly past Given.

The goal sealed victory for the Blues and – after Liverpool were beaten 3-1 at Arsenal the following day – Champions League qualification was secured.
