Everton Ladies captain Dan Turner has called on her teammates to finish the campaign on a high note to ensure a positive start to 2018/19.
The Blue Girls skipper, who scored the opener in the 2-1 defeat to Bristol City on Sunday, stressed the importance of Wednesday’s WSL 1 game against Yeovil Town at Marine (7pm kick-off) in Everton’s quest to achieve that, but warned of the challenge ahead against a Glovers side which has taken 0-0 draws from recent matches against Birmingham City and Arsenal.
“We know the threat they [Yeovil] pose as shown by their last two results against Birmingham City and Arsenal,” said Turner. “Yeovil will make it difficult for us so we may have to be patient throughout the game, but we trust ourselves to be professional and get the result we want whilst putting in a good display for everyone.
“The girls and I feel that how you end a season can often have an effect on the following season so we all want to finish strongly. We know there is quality within the squad, but we know there is room for improvement, too.
“The more games we play together the better we will become. It is important to remember that this is our first season back in the top flight and we do feel we have been improving over the course of the season, but we are always striving to be better, starting with Wednesday.”
Turner believes the quick turnaround in games can benefit the Blue Girls, highlighting the need to switch focus towards Yeovil after the ‘hurt’ of their last-minute defeat to Bristol on Sunday, which saw their opponents leapfrog them into eighth place in the table.
“We are an honest group and we were very disappointed to lose in the way we did, especially as we felt we had performed reasonably well in the second half,” added Turner. “However, we need to pick ourselves up and make sure we are in the right mindset as we face another test against Yeovil.
“To lose in the last minute of the game is always tough, but we recognise having another game so close can be a benefit. As a squad, we are working hard already to put that result behind us and focus on these last three games.”
