Pickford: Blues Have Belief For More Away-Day Joy

Jordan Pickford says Everton are confident they possess the ability to win at Swansea City and lay the platform for a flawless end to the campaign.

The Toffees go to south Wales on Saturday to face a Swansea side embroiled in a fight for Premier League survival – but on an upward curve having won their past four home games and opened up a four-point buffer to the bottom three.

Everton claimed victory at Stoke City on their most recent road trip and goalkeeper Pickford hopes that success in the Potteries will open the door for further away-day joy.

The Blues have been in fine form at Goodison Park, amassing 24 points from the past 36 available – and losing only twice in 12 matches to the Premier League's top two, Manchester City and Manchester United.

Everton shared a goalless home draw with Liverpool last weekend, albeit one point was very nearly converted into three when both Cenk Tosun and Dominic Calvert-Lewin came within a whisker of tipping the contest in the hosts' favour at the death.

Victory over Swansea could potentially see the Toffees climb a place to eighth – with matches against Newcastle United, Huddersfield Town, Southampton and West Ham United to come.

“We are coming off a good result on Saturday and our away form has picked up recently so we have got to go and get as many wins as we can in the last five games,” Pickford told evertontv.

“They are all winnable games, so why not go and win five. It will be a tough test because Swansea are struggling down there and will be fighting for their lives, so we have to make sure we are ready to come through it.

“We just need to do what we can do and, hopefully, that is enough to beat Swansea. We have enough ability throughout the squad to get the win.”

Pickford has kept clean sheets in two of his past four games and produced two first-rate saves to shutout Liverpool, sprawling athletically to tip a James Milner effort around the post shortly after demonstrating exceptional reactions to deny Dominic Solanke at point-blank range.

The Reds had crossed Stanley Park in rampant goalscoring form after netting 21 times in their previous eight games – and striking at a rate of 2.3 goals per Premier League match in the 2017/18 campaign.

Swansea, meanwhile, have been rejuvenated under the stewardship of manager Carlos Carvalhal.

The Portuguese took charge at the back end of 2017 with the Swans rooted to the foot of the table and five points adrift of safety.

But Carvalhal has masterminded a sequence of five wins and four draws from his 12 matches at the helm – a period which has included the Welsh club reeling off four successive wins at the Liberty Stadium, while scoring nine goals and conceding only twice in that quartet of games.

Pickford, though, is backing Everton to rival Swansea’s intensity in the same manner they withstood a fired-up Stoke team battling for its life to secure a 2-1 victory at the bet365 Stadium last month.

“We knew a couple of things just needed to come together and we would get the win we needed away from home,” said Pickford.

“Getting that one away win was going to be crucial for us and to get it at Stoke, which is probably one of the hardest places to go and get a result in the Premier League, made it even more pleasing.

“Swansea will be another very difficult game but we will be aiming to keep another clean sheet, get the three points and, hopefully, put together a good run right until the end of the season.”
