Cenk Tosun says his training-ground work with “legend of Everton” Duncan Ferguson is inspiring his prolific goalscoring run.
Striker Tosun bagged a double at Stoke City either side of Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting’s 77th-minute leveller for the hosts to secure a valuable 2-1 victory for the Toffees.
The Turkey international blasted home from close range on 69 minutes and then, with only six minutes to play, converted a diving header after meeting Theo Walcott’s measured right-wing delivery.
Tosun now has four goals in three matches after following up his first Everton strike at Burnley by scoring against Brighton & Hove Albion last week.
Everton's success amid a snowstorm at a freezing bet365 Stadium moves them onto 40 points, level with Leicester City in eighth and only three behind seventh-placed Burnley.
“I am very happy because of the two goals and the three points,” said Tosun.
“It was very important to win today so I have to thank my teammates. They were great in this hard weather, which made things really difficult, especially in the first half. But it improved in the second half – and we played better, as well.
“I work on my game after training with Duncan Ferguson. He was a legend of Everton and he has helped me a lot. We work together on my physique and on my shooting so I can do better on the pitch.
“Physically I feel better and I have settled in to the Premier League and England, so I feel better on the pitch as well.”
Tosun signed for Everton in January from Besitktas in his homeland. He scored 14 goals in 28 appearances for his former club this season but the Turkish Super Lig had entered its winter break when he transferred to Merseyside.
The 26-year-old nevertheless started twice for the Blues in the month of his arrival before a brief period out of the side, which coincided with the Blues' mid-season training camp in Dubai.
And after working closely with Sam Allardyce, first-team coach Ferguson and the rest of manager Allardyce’s experienced backroom staff he returned to the team in emphatic fashion.
Tosun has scored twice with his head and once each with his left and right feet. His Premier League strikes have come at a rate of one every 106 minutes.
The two he hit at Stoke secured a priceless away victory, with Everton taking a giant step towards replicating their stellar home form on away territory.
"We had a meeting before the game and talked about our away form and we played better than we have been – it was difficult but very important as well," said Tosun.
“I came to a league that continues [to play throughout the season]. We had a winter break in Turkey, so I was not physically 100 per cent when I arrived. I worked on that and now I feel sharper and better and can show more on the pitch.
“It was so cold. I could not feel my hands at half-time. But day to day I get better and have to get used to it. This is typical English weather. I like the cold! I grew up in Germany and it is similar to England.”
