Tosun Earning Rewards For Working Overtime

Cenk Tosun says extra hours spent on Everton’s training ground, along with working under boss Sam Allardyce and his backroom team, have got him up to speed with Premier League football – and the striker is promising to keep working hard to maintain his goalscoring form.

Turkey international Tosun became Allardyce’s first Toffees signing when he joined the Club in January and hit his maiden Goodison Park goal in Saturday’s 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion.

He had opened his Toffees account by clinically burying a header at Burnley seven days earlier. Tosun’s strike at the weekend – described by his manager as a “beautiful finish” – topped off a powerful, all-round centre-forward’s display, which served as further evidence that the 26-year-old is adjusting to the demands of the notoriously frantic and combative English game.

He created a further two chances against Brighton, engaged in 12 duels and located his intended target with 80 per cent of his 30 passes.

Tosun came to Everton fresh from hitting the net 14 times in 19 starts for Besiktas this term, a return which included four goals in the Champions League to propel the Istanbul club into the competition’s knockout stages.

The Germany-born forward struck 20 times in Besiktas’ title-winning campaign last season but accepted that English football presented an entirely different challenge from the one posed by the domestic game in his homeland.

Allardyce similarly stressed the importance of affording Tosun time to adapt to his new surroundings and, following the success against Brighton, revealed the Toffees’ February training camp in Dubai had been invaluable for the player – who agreed with his boss' assessment.

“It is two different cultures and it was not easy to settle in here,” Tosun told evertontv. “But I kept working. We had a winter break [in Dubai]. Before that I was not perfect in my physique.

“But I kept working and now I feel better – physically better and sharper.

“And I will keep working. I work after training as well and that is why I am feeling better now. I enjoy playing for Everton and for this manager."

Tosun started matches against Tottenham Hotspur and West Bromwich Albion in the month of his arrival.

And after coming off the bench in subsequent meetings with Arsenal and Watford, he returned to the Blues' starting XI for the game at Burnley.

The forward fired two of his three shots on target in 68 minutes on the pitch against Sean Dyche’s team. And to further demonstrate his instincts in front of goal, Tosun lashed home his only shooting opportunity in the win over Brighton which extended Everton’s fruitful run of results on their home ground.

The Toffees have accumulated 23 points from the past 30 available on their own patch, with 20 of those collected from the 27 up for grabs since Allardyce watched from Goodison’s Main Stand as Everton defeated West Ham United 4-0 ahead of his official appointment as boss.

And after completing 90 minutes in England for the first time, Tosun was already eyeing up the next chance to add to his tally – at Stoke City on Saturday.

He was equally keen to underline how a vibrant Goodison atmosphere lifted him as he hunted his first goal at the ground.

“It feels great and I want to thank the fans,” said Tosun. “They were behind us for 90 minutes [against Brighton] and like a 12th man.

“Yes [I am feeling confident] because strikers need goals and I have scored in two successive games now. It is good for the confidence.

“We are playing really well at home but have to be better in the away games. And I hope that starts next week at Stoke.”
