The promising partnership between Everton Under-23s strikers Bassala Sambou and Fraser Hornby will be put to the test when they young Blues face Chelsea in Premier League 2 action at Southport on Monday night, kick-off 7pm.
The Londoners are in fine form of late, winning seven of their past 10 games, and booked their place in the Checkatrade Trophy semi-finals with an impressive 3-0 victory over League One Oxford United, having already beaten fellow third tier side Portsmouth in the previous round.
But David Unsworth’s Toffees have started 2018 in strong fashion, earning wins over Tottenham Hotspur in the league and Portsmouth in the Premier League Cup.
The latter saw Sambou strike twice and Unsworth is pleased to see the burgeoning understanding between the former Coventry City youngster and Hornby, who has taken the step up from the Under-18s in his considerable stride.
“The two of them are looking like a good partnership and that’s great for us,” the young Blues boss told evertonfc.com. “There was a little bit of frustration with Bass for the first few months of the season because he picked up a couple of knocks and couldn’t get into the team on a regular basis.
“But in the last three or four weeks he has formed a really good partnership with Fraser and he looks like he is going to score goals at this level now.
“Bass is looking like he enjoys that link-up and a lot of that is how well Fraser is doing. He has come up from the Under-18s and acquitted himself really well. His performances have been terrific and we are now just trying to get him up to full speed and fitness in terms of what this next level demands.”
Tickets for Monday’s meeting with Chelsea at the Merseyrail Community Stadium are priced at £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. As always, Season Ticket holders and Members gain access to Under-23s and Ladies fixtures for free.
