Cenk Tosun says the fervent Goodison Park atmosphere can help him thrive in an Everton shirt – and the Turkish striker cannot wait to forge a strong bond with his new supporters.
Prolific forward Tosun penned a four-and-a-half year deal with the Blues on Friday to become manager Sam Allardyce’s first signing since taking charge in November.
The 26-year-old joins from Istanbul giants Besiktas, where he was a huge fans' favourite after spearheading the club’s title defence last season by plundering 20 goals in 29 Super Lig starts.
Tosun further cemented his place in Besiktas folklore this term, the 25-cap Turkey international’s four Champions League group-stage strikes securing his former team’s place in the last-16 of Europe's premier competition for the first time in 31 years.
Besiktas have the largest match-going support in Turkey and their domestic meetings with capital rivals Galatasaray and Fenerbahce are among the continent’s most explosive fixtures.
Tosun scored the breakthrough goal in Besiktas’ 3-0 victory over Galatasaray last month – one of eight strikes in 12 league starts this term – and is aiming to continue in the same vein when he launches his Toffees career.
“We had amazing fans, maybe the best fans in Turkey, and I have heard the Everton fans are the same – like Besiktas fans,” Tosun told evertontv.
“I cannot wait to meet them in the stadium and they have to trust me.
“I am very much looking forward to playing at Goodison Park. I know the stadium from watching the games on television and I have heard a lot about it.
“It is a really nice stadium, an old stadium with lots of history. I want to play for Everton in front of our home fans, because I have heard about the very good atmosphere inside the ground.”
Tosun’s first opportunity to play at his new home will potentially come in the Premier League encounter with West Bromwich Albion on 20 January.
He will train with his new team-mates this week, and hopes to get his first taste of English top-flight action when Everton clash with Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley next Saturday.
It would be an intriguing baptism for Tosun, with Spurs boasting the fifth most miserly defence in the division – the Londoners have conceded 21 goals in 22 matches – and playing their home matches this term at the national stadium.
“I want to train with my teammates and get to know them and, of course, play as soon as possible," said Tosun. "The Tottenham game will be the first game I am available for and I am very excited.
“I think big games and big atmospheres bring out the best in me. I like to play in good stadiums that generate good atmospheres.
“Besiktas was like this and I am sure at Everton it will be like this as well.”
