Jonjoe Kenny revealed he had “never felt a feeling like it” after helping Everton to a thrilling comeback victory over Watford.
The Kirkdale-born defender has played every minute of the Blues’ past four games since David Unsworth took over as manager.
Tasked with the responsibility of nullifying Hornets winger Richarlison, who has been impressive since signing from Fluminense in the summer, Kenny excelled with a typically determined performance.
And he says after coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Marco Silva’s side at Goodison Park, the relief and elation at full-time was something the 20-year-old had never before experienced.
“Being a Blue myself and knowing we were in a bit of a struggle not winning games, it was the feeling as a fan as well to get the win,” Kenny told evertonfc.com “I’ve never felt a feeling like it when the final whistle went.
“I’m just focused on kicking on now and improving as a player. We need to keep winning games - that’s how you stay happy and what helps you get better. I need to keep learning my trade in the Premier League and this is all great experience for me. It’s great to be involved.
“I wouldn’t say [the international break has come at a bad time]. It’s nice to go into it with a winning feeling. You want to keep playing after a result like that but international breaks are part of football and I’m used to it.”
Kenny, who is currently on England Under-21 duty ahead of a game against Ukraine on Friday, thanked Unsworth for the vote of confidence and his extended run in the senior side.
The Academy graduate, who helped England Under-20s win the World Cup in the summer, had worked under Unsworth in the Club’s Under-23s set-up and captained the young side to the Premier League 2 title last year.
“At the start of the season, I didn’t play as much as I wanted to but that’s football and how things go sometimes,” he added. “I had to make sure I was staying fit and ready for any chances that came my way.
“Unsy has come in and put me in for a bit of a run. It builds confidence game by game, knowing he is backing you. When he believes in me, I believe in myself.
“It feels great to be playing and I’m just delighted we could get the win going into the international break.”
