Martina Backs 'Strongest Squad' To Deliver

Cuco Martina believes Everton’s strong squad means a return to form is just around the corner.

The summer arrival has made eight appearances since moving to Goodison Park on a free transfer in July and, despite a stuttering spell of results, says Ronald Koeman's squad is the strongest he has been a part of.

“It's the strongest because there are some really great players,” said Martina. “We are in a little bit of a difficult situation right now and we know it’s not what the fans want to see, but I’m confident about myself and the team and I know the results will come.

“Maybe we need a little time because we have got seven or eight new players, but it will come, for sure.

“We know that we’ve had tough games, we did our best, it was not good enough, and we need to keep going and try to make the best [of it] we can.

“This week is going to be really tough and we need to stay fit for those three games against Brighton, Lyon and Arsenal. But we know the game plan and we need to stick to that.

“The fans need to help us also. We know they do that every game but, the more they do it, the better it is for us.”

A regular so far in his debut campaign, Martina believes that, even at the age of 28, the step up to Everton can improve his game.

“It is a really big club, you feel it,” he added. “The fans expect more things but it will come, for sure.

“For every player it is difficult if you come to a big club because you need to adapt quicker but, so far for me, it has been good.

“I’ve played quite a lot of games. I didn’t expect that I would play as many games, especially the Premier League games.

“We have more experienced players and I’m not there yet because there are bigger names, like Wayne Rooney, Leighton [Baines], Phil [Jagielka] and other players, but I listen to them, to whatever direction the team wants to go in, and I will follow them.

“Of course, I’m 28, I’m still young. They have more experience than me so I’m still learning the way to play here and they can teach me a lot of things.”
