Mollie Green admits she was hoping to open the new WSL 1 season with a Merseyside derby – and is delighted to see her wish come true.
Everton will face Liverpool on 22 September at the Select Security Stadium, live on BT Sport, kicking off at 7.45pm.
Former Liverpool attacker Green played in the previous meeting between the sides, an FA Cup fifth round tie back in March, but is determined to help the Toffees pick up all three points now she has swapped red for blue.
“I hoped that a derby would be the first game for us to kick off our season in WSL 1 and what a game it will be,” she told evertontv. “Hopefully we can gain a good result.
“We have had a really good pre-season. There is a real buzz within the group and it’s been one of the best pre-seasons I have ever been involved in. To then kick off the campaign with a derby – what more could you ask for? There is a really good environment here around the players and the staff and it’s exciting for us to be able to bring that onto the pitch.
“I played in the last derby and it was a really close game. I remember thinking afterwards that Everton had a lot about them, a lot of character and that Liverpool were a little bit lucky to get the win.
“Now I am on the other side and I think the team here is in a really good position to get a result in that game. We have seen the backing from the Club and the girls that we have got here, and we have a really good chance of starting off with a win.”
Green made her way through the ranks at Liverpool prior to her March move to Everton, and that 2-1 success in the FA Cup proved her final game in a red shirt.
While she will have the opportunity to see some familiar faces, she is only focused on helping the Blue Girls kick off the season in style, especially with tough fixtures against Manchester City, Birmingham City and Arsenal to follow.
“It will be nice to see some familiar faces and I have a lot of memories from my time at the club,” she added. “But I am at Everton now and I am excited to see what we can do.
“I’ll obviously know a few of the girls at Liverpool and how they play so hopefully I can give us a little bit of an advantage.
“A win in a derby to start the season would be massive. It is one of our biggest games in the league and a victory would stand us in good stead for the fixtures to come.”
