Monday’s newspapers speculate that Everton have rejected an offer from Chelsea for midfielder Ross Barkley.

The Daily Mail and the Daily Mirror both carry the story, with the latter suggesting the Londoners are set to make an improved bid before the close of the transfer window.

The Liverpool Echo claim Brighton and Crystal Palace are interested in signing Blues striker Oumar Niasse, while the Mirror link Ronald Koeman with a loan swoop for Watford’s Italy international forward Stefano Okaka.

Elsewhere, the Echo assess other offensive players the Toffees could move for before Thursday’s deadline, and also shed light on the career of another rumoured target, Croatia international Nikola Vlasic.

Finally, Jermain Defoe tells the Daily Star that Wayne Rooney deserves more respect for what he achieved with England.
