What The Papers Say - 25 August

The views on this page are taken from the local and national media and do not necessarily reflect the views of Everton.

Friday’s newspapers are dominated by Everton’s Europa League play-off success over Hajduk Split and the Gylfi Sigurdsson “wonderstrike” that helped the Blues secure a 3-1 aggregate victory over the Croatians.

The Guardian and the Daily Mail are among the editions to assess Sigurdsson’s contribution, while the Daily Mirror say the Iceland international and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford are already proving why Toffees boss Ronald Koeman pushed so hard to sign them.

The Liverpool Echo rate the individual performances of each player, while Koeman explains to the same paper why midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye sat out Thursday’s match at the Stadion Poljud.

Finally, England boss Gareth Southgate tells the Mirror he won’t rule out asking Everton forward Wayne Rooney to reconsider his international retirement ahead of next summer’s World Cup in Russia.
