Ronald Koeman revealed Gareth Barry’s absence from the Blues matchday squad to face Stoke was down to an injury the midfielder picked up in training during the week.
Barry has made 628 Premier League appearances and is just five shy of surpassing Ryan Giggs’s all-time record.
But the 36-year-old was unable to add to his tally in Everton’s 1-0 victory over Stoke, after twisting his ankle on Wednesday.
Koeman is nevertheless optimistic that Barry will be fit within the next seven days, albeit stopping short of setting a definitive date for the player’s return.
“Gareth twisted his ankle in our training session last Wednesday,” said Koeman. “He will be out for one more week… but it won’t be long.”
Everton are next in action on Thursday, when they welcome Hajduk Split to Goodison for the first leg of their Europa League play-off round tie.
Koeman then takes his team to Manchester City for a Premier League game on Monday, August 21.
