What The Papers Say - 7 August

Ronald Koeman is quoted as saying a deal to bring Swansea City playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson to Goodison Park is “close” in Monday’s newspapers.

“It is close but we have to wait,” Koeman said following the 2-2 draw with Sevilla. “The deal isn’t done.”

The Blues continue to be linked with a move for Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, while there are rumours Gunners teammate Danny Welbeck could also be a target for Koeman.

Elsewhere, it is claimed West Bromwich Albion are prepared to offer Gareth Barry a two-year deal in an attempt to lure him to The Hawthorns.

And finally, it is reported that James McCarthy and Aaron Lennon were left out of Everton’s final pre-season game over the weekend because of injuries.
