Unsworth: A Proud Day For Everton

by Mike Taylor @Everton

David Unsworth declared it “a proud day for Everton” after five Blues helped England Under-20s to World Cup glory.

The Everton Under-23s coach watched from afar as Dominic Calvert-Lewin struck the all-important goal in a 1-0 win over Venezuela in Sunday’s final in Suwon, South Korea.

Jonjoe Kenny, Kieran Dowell and Ademola Lookman also impressed for the Young Lions, while Callum Connolly was an unused substitute on the night.

And, having been part of the England Under-20s squad that finished third at the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship in Australia, Unsworth recognises just how impressive the feat of is.

“It’s an amazing achievement,” he told evertonfc.com. “What they have done is very, very special. It probably hasn’t sunk in just how special it is yet. I played in [an Under-20s World Cup] myself, so I know it is so difficult to win a competition like that, with the talent and great teams you have to get past.

“We are so, so proud of our Everton boys. I am delighted. I was biting my nails and shouting at the TV, then I was jumping around at the full-time whistle. It was a great team performance and the lads dug in when they needed to.

“I’m thrilled for [England Under-20s manager] Paul Simpson, too. He is a good friend of mine, I know him very well. I spoke to him a lot before the tournament about our players and he’s been in contact throughout the tournament as well. He’s been so complimentary about our boys - and that makes us all very proud.

“It’s a very proud day for Everton because for those lads to represent our Club in the way they have done is just fantastic.”

Discussing match-winner Calvert-Lewin, whose 35th-minute goal against Venezuela was his third of the tournament, Unsworth added: “For an Everton player to score a goal in a World Cup final - at any level - is what dreams are made of.

“It’s a fantastic way to end what has been a marvellous season for Dominic. He deserves everything and all the accolades that have come his way. He is a great guy, very humble and an Everton player with hopefully a lot more to come.”
