Koeman Still Setting High Standards

by Mike Taylor

Welcome, Marco!

Everything you need to know about the new boss here.

Ronald Koeman insists his Everton side must maintain their high standards in the final three games of the season.

The Blues succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea last weekend - their first home defeat in the league since the turn of the year - but also guaranteed European football as West Bromwich and Southampton failed to win.

And while Koeman knows his side have secured at least a seventh-place finish, he has warned his players he will make changes to his starting line-up if they do not perform to their maximum.

“We will train normally, train aggressively and prepare the team for the weekend,” he told evertontv. “Of course, you expect the players to be motivated to play. If they are not, or if they are showing differences to normal, then I will keep them out of the team.

“We will play with a strong team this weekend. We want to win - we know it will be difficult but we need a good win, a good performance and to finish the season strongly.

“We know Swansea are a a team who had a good result last week against Manchester United. They need points, they need wins to fight against relegation. We can expect a strong team, an aggressive team that is really focused on winning the game. That always makes it difficult.”

Koeman is also looking for a reaction to the goalless draw with West Ham United last time out on the road, a performance Koeman believes lacked intensity.

Indeed, the Dutchman would like to see the Toffees replicate their home form on their travels on a more consistent basis going forward.

“I think we had a really poor last away game,” added Koeman. “We need to perform better. We need to show more intensity. It’s an opportunity to show our strengths when we play away from home.

“There is still a difference with our away form [compared to the home form]. That difference is in most of the Premier League teams but I think we can show more away from home than we have showed. Of course, that is an issue that we will look at.”
