Kieran Dowell has admitted he is “buzzing” to face Chelsea and potentially win the Premier League 2 crown on Friday night.
Everton’s Under-23s are at Aldershot’s Recreation Ground to face the Londoners knowing a win will seal the two points they require to be named champions.
Instead of feeling the pressure of such an occasion, Dowell declared he has struggled to contain his excitement and cannot wait to walk out onto the pitch to, hopefully, get the job done.
“I’ve not really been able to keep my excitement in check – I am buzzing for it! It’s the same for the rest of the lads," said the midfielder.
“All season we have been there or thereabouts at the top of the league. We are going to have to treat it like any other game. It was like the Tottenham game – nobody was really thinking about winning the league when we were on the pitch. We just wanted to get the win. That was the most important thing.
“After all the hard work we have put in, it would be disappointing not to come away with the medal. We have been favourites for the last few weeks to lift the title.
“It is in our hands and it’s this type of pressure game that you want as a young player.”
The young Blues face a tough test in Chelsea, who sit fifth in the Premier League 2 table and earned a 3-0 success over Sunderland last time out.
But Dowell wants a victory as soon as possible, especially with a Merseyside derby against Liverpool Under-23s at Goodison Park to end the season.
“Chelsea have always been a good side, especially at our age group,” he added. “It will be one of the biggest tests of the season. But we are top of the league for a reason and if you want to be the best you have to beat the best.
“If we beat Chelsea, it is probably the only time we will ever go into a Merseyside derby relaxed! Hopefully we will have got the job done and we can go into that game and enjoy ourselves against Liverpool at Goodison.”
