Liverpool-born duo Jonjoe Kenny and Joe Williams are ready to help the Everton first team and “won’t let anyone down” if called upon by Blues boss Ronald Koeman.
That’s the view of David Unsworth, who has watched the young players help carry the Club’s Under-23s to the verge of a Premier League 2 title this season.
Unsworth handed Under-23s skipper Kenny, who has been named on the bench for each of Everton’s past four games, his senior debut against Norwich City last May when in caretaker charge of the Toffees.
Williams, meanwhile, is yet to sample first-team action but was in the matchday 18 for the recent fixtures against Manchester United and champions Leicester City.
And Unsworth, whose charges will seal the Premier League 2 crown with a victory against Chelsea at Aldershot on Friday, says both will be out to make an impression if they follow in the footsteps of Tom Davies and Matthew Pennington and get the nod from Koeman before the end of the campaign.
“They’re certainly ready and, if called upon, they won’t let anyone down, I know that for certain,” he told evertonfc.com. “Jonjoe’s already had a little taste of it and Joe’s been unlucky with injuries because he was the Under-23s’ Player of the Season last season.
“He got injured towards the end of the campaign and had to spend the whole summer in rehab and then on his way back he got another little injury.
“He’s just coming into his form again now and he’s getting that opportunity, that break that he needs by being in and around the first-team lads.
“But they’re another two off the production line who will be absolutely fine if called upon and they’re both humble lads and very professional.”
If handed a debut in the final five games of the season, Williams would become the sixth Academy graduate in just over a year to make a Premier League breakthrough, following Davies, Pennington, Kenny, Callum Connolly and Kieran Dowell.
Youngsters Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Mason Holgate have also stamped their mark on the first team this term, having progressed through Unsworth’s Under-23s.
And the 1995 FA Cup-winning defender added: “What all these lads are when they step up into the first team is desperate to be Everton players. I love that desperation in a young player.
“They’re not big-timers, they're just desperate to represent this Football Club and this Football Club brings them up in the right way.”
