Dom Targets A Run In The Team

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has set himself the new target of nailing down a regular place in Everton’s starting line-up during the season run-in.

The young forward wants to show that he is here to stay after his goalscoring display against Hull City.

It was only last month when Calvert-Lewin stated his short-term aim was to simply force his way back into the first-team frame before the end of the season, following his untimely ankle injury suffered just 12 minutes into his previous start against Southampton in January.

Having now reached - and bettered - that aim, he is intent on keeping his position and making more goalscoring contributions.

“I got a little inkling on Friday that I might be playing - that’s when you kind of know you are in with a chance,” admitted the 20-year-old, who struck eight goals in a loan spell with Northampton Town during 2015/16.

“I was quite nervous on Saturday morning after last time [against Southampton], if I’m being honest. But once you get to the ground and settle in, the routine kicks in and I was fine then.

“The manager’s shown big belief in me. Getting injured, I thought it might be a bit longer before I got my opportunity again. But the boss thought I was ready and so did I, so I like to think I’ve repaid him with my performance.

“Everyone wants a run in the side. Obviously I’ve got the internationals now [with England Under-20s] and I’ll go away to France and hopefully get a couple of games. I’ll come back and then be ready to go.”
