Charity Needs Your Help

As we see the first daffodils of the year bloom, terminal illness charity Marie Curie is asking people of Liverpool to volunteer to collect for its Great Daffodil Appeal in March.

Volunteering just two hours of your time to give out daffodil pins in return for a donation can help Marie Curie Nurses be there for people living with a terminal illness in their own homes and at the Liverpool Hospice in Woolton.

The Great Daffodil Appeal is Marie Curie’s biggest annual fundraising campaign, with Liverpool’s branch launching at the Shankly Hotel’s Bastion Restaurant and Bar to encourage the city’s people to get involved and help to sell, or simply buy a daffodil pin during the big street collection on 3-5 March in Liverpool city centre. But the charity needs people to sign up to help now!

The launch saw some of the city’s businesses gathering at the Shankly Hotel to show their support to the Daffodil Appeal and Everton Ambassador Graham Stuart was on hand to show he’s backing the campaign.

Kelvin Carter, Marie Curie collector and face of The Great Daffodil Appeal, said: “Sylvia, my first wife, was a Marie Curie Nurse. She enjoyed being in a position to be able to help people, that was why she did nursing. When Sylvia was diagnosed with cancer, I knew that I couldn’t do her justice in looking after her in the way that she deserved to be.

"The Marie Curie hospice where she worked offered to look after her and I was absolutely delighted to think that the people who had worked with her, and loved her, were able to care for her. It was amazing – it couldn’t have been better. I raise money for the appeal in Sylvia’s memory. Two hours spent collecting isn’t a lot of time but every second counts. I would encourage anyone to collect - If I can do it, you can, too!”

The Daffodil Afternoon Tea at the Shankly Hotel will take place at 12-3pm on Saturday 25th March. To book, call 0151 541 9999 and quote Marie Curie

Stuart, who won the FA Cup with Everton in 1995, said: “Marie Curie is a fantastic charity supporting people living with terminal illness and we are lucky to have a hospice here in Liverpool. I am sure the great people of this city will come together this March to support the Great Daffodil Appeal.”

There are many ways you can get involved. Sign up at a collection, have a box of daffodils at your place of work or hold an event – big or small it all helps!
