Ronald Koeman has confirmed James McCarthy will not be available for the Boxing Day trip to Leicester City.
The midfielder sustained a hamstring injury against Liverpool and, at Thursday's press conference, his manager updated to say a spell on the sidelines of 'two to three weeks'.
Koeman also revealed Maarten Stekelenburg is a doubt for the game against the Foxes, with the goalkeeper sustaining a dead leg in the Merseyside derby.
"Maarten will be doubtful for Boxing Day," he said. "James is out. It’s a slight hamstring injury and that’s bad news because the boy was doing well. I’m a little bit worried about how many of this kind of injuries [he has had]. He will be out for two or three weeks."
There was some good news, however, with the boss immediately playing down any concern that Leighton Baines would be missing.
Koeman added: "Leighton did not train today but he will be available for the weekend."
