Duo To Be Monitored

James McCarthy and Maarten Stekelenburg will both be assessed ahead of the Boxing Day trip to Leicester City after coming off injured during the Merseyside derby.

McCarthy was replaced by Gareth Barry at the break after suffering a hamstring problem late in the first half, while Stekelenburg was involved in a collision with teammate Leighton Baines midway through the second period and eventually had to make way for Joel Robles.

“James played well in the first 45 minutes but he was not sure about his hamstring and we couldn’t take that risk,” explained Blues boss Ronald Koeman afterwards. “With the goalkeeper, it is always a difficult situation.

“We need to recover from tonight now. We’ve had a big, intensive game and we will prepare and see which players are available [for Leicester] and, in particular, the fitness of both of those players.”
