It was a weekend to forget for Everton’s loanees as three suffered defeat and Aiden McGeady failed a late fitness test.
In the Championship, Luke Garbutt played the full 90 minutes of Wigan Athletic’s game at Aston Villa but suffered a late blow when Jack Grealish grabbed the game’s only goal for the hosts.
McGeady, who missed out on what would have been an 11th appearance of the campaign, could at least celebrate a victory as his Preston North End teammates overcame his absence to beat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 at Deepdale.
Preston’s Daniel Johnson and Blackburn’s Danny Graham both hit braces, before Callum Robinson sealed a dramatic win for the hosts with just 10 minutes remaining.
The victory moves Preston up to 12th in the Championship table, three points off the play-off positions.
In League Two, Russell Griffiths kept goal for Cheltenham Town in their home game against Exeter City but couldn’t prevent the Robins falling to a 3-1 defeat.
Cheltenham’s Billy Waters had provided hope of a result when he cancelled out Lee Holmes’ opener with 20 minutes to go but two goals from David Wheeler secured all three points for the Grecians. The result means Cheltenham remain 23rd in the table, three points from safety.
In the Premier League, Brendan Galloway was an unused substitute as Chelsea’s Diego Costa struck to inflict a 1-0 defeat on West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge, while over in Germany Shani Tarashaj missed Eintracht Frankfurt’s goalless draw with Hoffenheim.
