Williams Skippers Wales To Victory

by Rob Urbani @Everton

Ashley Williams captained Wales to victory on Monday evening as The Dragons began their World Cup 2018 qualifying campaign with a comfortable 4-0 victory over Moldova.

Summer signing Williams played 82 minutes in Cardiff where goals from Joe Allen and Sam Vokes, plus Gareth Bale’s second-half brace saw Chris Coleman’s side come out on top.

Seamus Coleman also wore the captain’s armband for Republic of Ireland who secured a hard-earned 2-2 draw in Serbia.

The right-back missed the first month of the season with an ankle injury but he returned to fitness in time to play the full match in Belgrade.

Jeff Hendrick and Daryl Murphy were on target for Ireland in the Group D clash.

Meanwhile, at Under-21s level, Gerard Deulofeu was another captain and also on target for Spain who drew 1-1 in Sweden.

The Blues winger netted in the 50th minute, finishing well with a first-time right-foot shot.

Earlier in the evening, a fourth skipper in young Everton defender Morgan Feeney was on target for England Under-18s in their 5-1 victory over Israel at Morecambe.

And first-year scholar Fraser Hornby netted the only goal as Scotland Under-19s, coached by former Blue Scott Gemmill, defeated Greece.
