'A Pleasure To Watch'

David Unsworth described Everton Under-23s’ 4-1 victory at Leicester City as “a pleasure to witness”.

The young Blues made it four wins from four in 2016/17 so far, with goals from Harry Charsley, Courtney Duffus, Antony Evans and Calum Dyson putting the Foxes to the sword in a gruelling encounter on Thursday.

The hosts posed a physical test to a less senior Toffees side, but Unsworth’s troops held strong and found a way to secure a convincing result.

And speaking after the final whistle, the Under-23s head coach shared his pride with evertonfc.com.

“It doesn’t matter who we play or what age they are - we’re a young squad but the way we apply ourselves is a pleasure to watch,” he enthused.

“I said that to them after the game, the performance was an absolute pleasure to witness.

“To play four games in 11 days and get four wins shows our fitness levels are brilliant, as was the way we applied ourselves against a really tough, physical team. We spoke about it in the hotel before the game and it was really important we competed and, after we won the battle, some of our football was superb.

“We were clinical when we got our opportunities and we carved them open in the second half. You won’t see a better goal than our fourth anywhere in the country.”

Initially reluctant to single out any of his players for special praise after a superb collective effort, a thrilled Unsworth was ultimately unable to hold back his individual plaudits.

“The team performance was the most pleasing thing for me and within that, there were some outstanding individual ones,” he added. “I don’t think anyone had a bad game.

“I thought big Calum Dyson was outstanding – the best I’ve seen him play in an Everton shirt and I was delighted he got a goal in the end because he’s a great lad and a very popular member of the squad.

“But within that, Harry Charsley, Jonjoe Kenny, Calum Connolly, Beni Baningime, Kieran Dowell – who looked like Kieran Dowell today – it was a great team performance. How Gethin Jones keeps going to the well and producing the sort of miles and long-distance running, I don’t know.

“There were massive performances from the majority of the players and to win four games in 11 days makes me very proud.”
