Leighton Baines is predicting a bright future for Mason Holgate at Goodison Park after his encouraging first-team debut against Tottenham Hotspur.
Baines has been mightily impressed with how the young defender has made the step up to the senior squad since Ronald Koeman became manager.
Holgate joined from Barnsley a year ago but spent his first season at the Club training and playing with the Under-21s.
Koeman promoted the 19-year-old at the start of pre-season, including him in the squads that travelled to Austria and Dresden.
He excelled against a full-strength Manchester United side in Wayne Rooney’s testimonial and followed this up with another display of promise in the 1-1 draw against Spurs.
At Goodison on Saturday, Holgate made his competitive bow on the right side of a back-three alongside Phil Jagielka and Ramiro Funes Mori.
“He [Holgate] has been around us long enough and has featured heavily in pre-season, and he has handled the whole thing well,” Baines told evertontv.
“He’s already earned the trust of the players and the manager - that’s why he was out there.
“He’s done himself the world of good with that performance and I’m sure he’ll feature a lot throughout the season.”
