Graeme Sharp believes Everton’s players will be relishing the prospect of working under Ronald Koeman.
The Club Ambassador insists the Dutchman’s playing career and subsequent success as a manager make the appointment an exciting one for fans and playing squad alike.
Sharpy had the chance to meet with Koeman alongside Ian Snodin and Graham Stuart recently and was impressed with the new boss, which only added to his opinion of him after his trophy-laden playing career.
“If I’m a player now and Ronald Koeman’s come in, I’m excited for pre-season - and that’s no disrespect to anyone else,” Sharp told evertontv. “You’ve got somebody that’s played at the highest level and won trophies all over the world. That’s somebody to play for.
“Our players are away or at the Euros at the moment, but I think they’ll be excited at the prospect of working with Ronald. His pedigree is top drawer.
“We want him to come here and push us into the elite of the Premier League. Having seen what Leicester did last year, you never know but there’s no reason why we can’t enjoy successful times here under the new manager.”
After the departure of Roberto Martinez prior to the final fixture of the season against Norwich, Sharp insists it was vital Everton went out and made a statement with their choice of successor.
And he believes the Blues have done just that with a man whose name is known around the footballing fraternity.
“He’s a world-renowned footballer and everybody knows his name,” he added. “In his managerial roles he’s undertaken he’s done well, but most people will remember him as a player. He was fantastic and his early stages of management have been successful. I’m pleased with the appointment.
“I think it was important we went out and showed our intent - and we’ve done that. This was the man we wanted, we got him here so I’m looking forward to a very successful tenure.”
