Stones Lauds England Skipper

John Stones has lauded the impact of Wayne Rooney - both on and off the field - ahead of England’s Euro 2016 opener against Russia.

The Three Lions play their opening game of the tournament at Stade Vélodrome on Saturday evening, with fellow Group B opponents Wales and Slovakia facing off three hours before.

It was confirmed on Thursday that Everton Academy graduate Rooney will face the Blues in a testimonial later this summer - and defender Stones believes the England captain’s achievements put him among the nation’s greatest.

“You don't beat Bobby Charlton's [international goalscoring] record easily and Wayne has done it with style,” Stones told Everton's international betting partners, Dafabet. “It's a great achievement and Wayne has to be up there with the England greats and to have played with him is a massive honour for me.

“Wayne has been there and done it. He knows the game and always knows when to do the right thing - when to tell us to liven up or give us that confidence. I think it takes a great leader to know when to do certain things in certain times of the game or before the game.

“You look to those sorts of players and they have the presence about them and you look to them for inspiration. He’s definitely someone who you can look up to.”
