Everton defender Matthew Pennington has joined League One promotion hopefuls Walsall on a loan deal until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old, who can play as a centre-back or right-back, made his first-team debut in the Capital One Cup win over Barnsley back in August.

He also made an appearance off the bench in the Blues’ 2-0 FA Cup third round victory over Dagenham & Redbridge this term.

Pennington’s move to the Saddlers will be his third loan spell, having previously spent successful stints with Tranmere Rovers and Coventry City.

The Warrington-born Academy graduate, who joined the Club aged 11, was named the Sky Blues’ Young Player of the Season last campaign - and was rewarded for his impressive form with a new three-year contract at Goodison Park last summer.

Jon Whitney’s Walsall currently sit third in League One, level on points with second-placed Wigan Athletic.
