There were mixed fortunes for Everton’s loan players on the opening weekend of the season.
Youngsters Jonjoe Kenny and Francisco Junior both played 55 minutes as Wigan Athletic began their League One campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Coventry City on Saturday.
Kenny, 18, and Junior, 23, who joined the Latics on loan last month, were amongst 10 players making their first bow under new boss Gary Caldwell, with a brace from Adam Armstrong enough to hand Coventry the three points at the Ricoh Arena.
The loan pair combined brilliantly in the first half when the score was 1-0. Junior sent Kenny on his way down the right but Will Grigg couldn’t get a strong enough connection on the defender’s cross to direct it towards goal for an equaliser.
Fellow Everton loanees Jordan Thorniley and Calum Dyson helped Stockport County down Boston United 2-1 in their competitive debuts for the Conference North club.
Centre-back Thorniley had a hand in the first goal as his free-kick was met by Kay Odejayi, who cut the ball back for Glenn Rule to head home from close range.
Thorniley, 18, played the full match while Dyson, who almost found the back the net via Sefton Gonzales’ pass before Stockport’s opener, was replaced by the eventual match-winner Joe Garvin after 62 minutes.
Luke Garbutt, who has joined Fulham on a season-long loan, didn’t feature in the London club’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City due to an ankle ligament injury.
