Roberto Martinez admits he has been impressed with Tyias Browning’s pre-season form so far.
The young Everton defender started against Swindon Town in the Blues' opening pre-season fixture and kept his place in the starting line-up in the Barclays Asia Trophy win over Stoke City.
Browning began at centre-half against the Potters before switching to right-back for the second half, and Martinez was full of praise for the Academy graduate.
“It was a great game for Tyias,” said the Toffees boss. “He is starting to show a really good level of consistency.
“Tyias is very versatile. He is someone who can play and defend very well as a centre-half and as a full-back. The physical level he is at means he can play for the full 90 minutes under these conditions.
“He showed he is someone with a very bright future. We need to make sure we give him the right steps for his develop now.”
One such step is being able to pair him with skipper Phil Jagielka, who led by example against Stoke with a magnificent saving tackle on Marko Arnautovic in the first half, before smashing home the winning penalty.
The standard set by the captain is one Martinez welcomes and hopes can influence the younger players in the squad.
“Phil is already hitting the levels that you need to play competitive games,” he added.
“The tackle he put in during the first half showed an incredible awareness and great technique.
“As a player you need pre-season to get back your full sharpness but Phil just replicates the level of the performances he showed in the last campaign.”
