Everton Under-21s are at the end of their week-long stay in Obertraun, Austria, and we’ve been getting the inside track from every day of the young Blues’ pre-season training camp. Today it's the turn of captain Jonjoe Kenny to round up the trip…
We started our last full day with a standard pre-match session - it was pretty tough with a few sprints, possession boxes and 7-a-side games.
Pre-season always is tough and we’ve only been off for a few weeks, so it’s more a case of keeping ourselves topped up. The lads are already fit so it’s just about getting back into the routine.
We then played an Austrian third division side on Tuesday afternoon called Atsv Stadl-Paura. They were a senior side much older than a lot of us so it was a good test. We won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Sam Byrne but could have had a few more.
But aside from the result, it was good to get back playing games. That’s what football is all about and it was great to get 45 minutes under each of our belts.
It was a nice reward for the week too - we just can’t wait to get back home and into the fixtures we’ve got lined up.
As captain, it’s been great to know the lads have been first class all week. Their fitness levels are getting better every season and there’s loads of players in our group now so everyone’s fighting for places.
That means you have to be at your best in every training session and try to win every race.
It’s a big season for me now. I want to start pushing on, doing things for the first team or, if not, going out on loan.
Pre-season is the starting point for me to kick on.
