Blues Trio Play In Dublin Draw

Seamus Coleman, James McCarthy and Steven Naismith all played in Saturday’s 1-1 draw between Republic of Ireland and Scotland.

Everton’s Irish duo completed the 90 minutes as it finished honours even in the European Championship Group D qualifying clash in Dublin. Naismith was substituted in second-half stoppage time for the visitors.

Aiden McGeady had been struggling with a hamstring complaint in the lead up to the match and was only adjudged fit enough to take a place on the bench, however he was not called upon by Ireland boss Martin O’Neill.

Jonathan Walters tapped in from close-range to give the home side a 38th-minute lead but Scotland struck back just after the restart through Shaun Maloney’s deflected shot.

Blues midfielder McCarthy was booked during the first half after catching Russell Martin in the face with a stray arm, while Naismith also collected a yellow card late in the contest following an altercation with James McClean.

The draw means Scotland temporarily move up to second position in the Group D standings, though they will drop back down to third should World Champions Germany, as expected, beat Gibraltar later on Saturday evening.

Republic of Ireland remain in fourth position after taking nine points from the opening six fixtures.

Poland, who beat Georgia 4-0, top the table having recouped 14 points from their first six matches.
