Roberto Martinez insists Romelu Lukaku’s motivation this Saturday will simply be to help win the game for Everton - and not prove a point to former club Chelsea or their manager Jose Mourinho.
The Belgian striker is expected to shrug off a toe complaint and line-up against the Londoners for the first time in his Toffees career this weekend.
Last season, he was ineligible to play against Chelsea as Premier League rules prevent loanees from featuring against their parent clubs.
“Rom has strong inner strength and I don’t think he is motivated by who he is facing or who is in front of him,” Martinez told evertontv. “It’s more about his role and status at Everton – he is a vital player for us and he is enjoying and embracing that.
“I do feel that we are going to see the best of Rom this season and I am really excited by his performances ahead in all different competitions, not because he is facing a former club.
“He’s fresh and wants to enjoy every moment that he is out on the football pitch. He’s going to take full advantage of his role at the Club.”
Lukaku’s barnstorming surge down the right wing led to Steven Naismith’s goal against Arsenal last weekend.
It was the Scotland international’s second strike in as many games, and Martinez believes the former Rangers man has already laid the foundations for what could be his most prolific season.
“Steven has been magnificent,” added the Everton manager. “He’s a very intelligent footballer.
"I always said that his biggest strength is his understanding of the game and how he can put into practice strong football ideas.
“I don’t see Steven as a number nine, more a player who can play in a position behind the striker.
"He’s in a great moment of form, has scored two in two and over the next 10 months I can see him having the best season he has had in England.”
