Everton boss Roberto Martinez says John Stones is in the perfect place to fulfill his massive potential.

The 20-year-old centre-back signed a new five-year contract with the Blues on Thursday, committing himself until the summer of 2019.

Stones, a January 2013 arrival from Barnsley, enjoyed his breakthrough Premier League campaign last term and was rewarded for his fine form with a first senior England cap and a standby call-up for the World Cup in Brazil.

Now Martinez is expecting the youngster to kick on to even greater heights – not least by drawing on the experience of his more senior defensive colleagues.

"It's a very important signing for the Club and a really good reward to a young footballer with a  fantastic future, who had a really good season last campaign," Martinez told evertontv.

"John has got the likes of Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz to learn from and there's a great opportunity to do that.

"It's a very important season coming up for John but also I think a very easy season. He just needs to focus on his development and fighting for his place.

"This is the perfect place for him to develop as a young man and a young footballer."
