Roberto Martinez says Sunday’s game against Leicester City is another chance for the squad’s younger players to stake their first-team claim.
The group that has travelled to Thailand contains a blend of experience and youth, with the likes of Sylvain Distin, Leon Osman, Gareth Barry and Steven Pienaar joined by Luke Garbutt, Chris Long, Hallam Hope, Tyias Browning, Conor McAleny, Matthew Kennedy and John Lundstram.
The up-and-coming talents all played 45 minutes in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Tranmere Rovers and could feature again in the friendly against the Foxes at the Suphachalasai Stadium.
Martinez said: “We are going to face Leicester again in three weeks so this will add that little bit of extra spice to the game, but for us it’s all about trying to find the competition for places.
“Some of the players have been participating in the World Cup and are still recovering so they aren’t with us. That means young players at the Club have got an opportunity to show how ready they are to be part of the first-team squad next season.
“We need extra numbers with the extra demands we have in the season, so there is real excitement.”
