Roberto Martinez believes Everton’s pre-season schedule is the ideal preparation for the new campaign.

The Blues have been training in Austria all week and have now returned to Mersesyside ahead of Tueasday’s first summer friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

Four subsequent warm-up games follow, with Everton facing a range of opposition and encountering a number of different travel scenarios.

Martinez told evertontv: “Training has been very, very good. The facilities were excellent and we have been fortunate with the weather as well.

“The most important aspect has been the attitude and the approach of the squad. This is a winning squad with incredible standards and the work reflects that.

“We have had up to three sessions a day and that has provided a lot of good preparation for the bodies.”

Attention naturally turns now to the sequence of friendly matches but Martinez explained that they should be viewed as an extension of pre-season training rather than a distraction from it.

“You don’t prepare for friendlies, they are part of the preparation,” he declared.

“The games we have pose really good challenges for different reasons. We have a special team to celebrate 10 years service from Leon Osman; Porto are a really strong team in European football.

“Celta Vigo is a team which had a successful second half of last season and now have a new manager. We have a good exercise in Thailand (against Leicester City) before that, helping us with adapting to travelling and playing games.

“It’s important to face British opposition as well and then we have the German trip (to face SC Paderborn), which is very much trying to prepare for the type of scenario we will face in Europa League.”
