Duncan Ferguson has thrown his backing behind the Blue’s England trio in the latest Everton magazine.
Despite his Scottish roots, Big Dunc believes Roy Hodgson’s men can have a good tournament, even after losing to Italy in their opening group game.
The Three Lions more than matched their European rivals and Ferguson believes that gives cause for optimism heading into the crunch games with Uruguay and Costa Rica.
He reasoned: “Why not? They’re as good as anyone and our league is as good as any so why play down the chances?
“England have got some great players and they have a good chance if they play with a bit of freedom. They’ll surprise a few.
“I think they’ll do well. I’ve watched a bit of England and they have got a good chance if they go for it.”
Of the trio, Ferguson has tipped youngster Barkley to shine out in Brazil. “He had a great season and he adapted really well,” he added. “Everyone knows what a talent he can be. He’s a great player and he’s put a lot of hard work in. The experience will help him. I’ve been very impressed with him.
“He has other players from the club with him in the squad and that will help him. It does help to have a familiar face or two, especially as Ross is a quiet lad.
“You need a couple of lads to help show you the ropes and where and when to go to meals and things. It’s great for Everton that the club has so many players in the England squad.”
Elsewhere in the June issue, and continuing the World Cup theme, both Leighton Baines and Tim Howard reveal their thoughts of facing the world’s best in Brazil.
They are joined by former Blues midfielder Peter Reid, Antolin Alcaraz reminiscing about playing in the 2010 tournament in South Africa, and Tony Bellew having his say on why John Stones was unlucky to miss out.
Gerard Deulofeu bids a fond farewell to Goodison Park following the conclusiuon of his season-long loan from Barcelona, Jonjoe Kenny and Ryan Ledson talk European Championship success and Roberto Martinez explains his plans for the summer.
Priced at £3.50, the Everton magazine is available at all good retailers.
