Jags Confident Of Progressing

by Adam Clark @efc_adamclark

Phil Jagielka believes the knockout stages of the 2014 World Cup still beckon for England - if they can continue to show the same attacking intent they did in Saturday's narrow defeat against Italy.

The Three Lions were unfortunate to be edged out by the Azzurri as goals from Claudio Marchisio and Mario Balotelli gave the 2006 champions a 2-1 win.

Uruguay, who suffered a shock 3-1 loss to Costa Rica in their opening game, now lie in wait on Thursday.

And Jagielka said: “Obviously we’re frustrated. There were a number of missed opportunities but it’s up to us now to take this in to the Uruguay game and hopefully put in a similar performance but come away with a few more points.

“The feeling in the dressing room is one of disappointment right now, but we’ll fly back to Rio, have a cool down day tomorrow, then we’ll look at some video footage of the game and try and take some of the positives out of it.

“I’m sure there’s a lot to take out of it, quite a few good performances. But, at the end of the day, we’ve come away with no points."

England did have chances to add to Daniel Sturridge's first-half effort but Wayne Rooney spurned one opportunity before goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu denied both Ross Barkley and Leighton Baines.

"Their keeper has pulled off some really good saves," Jagielka added. "On another night possibly we get a draw, if not something more.”
