Hodgson: Ross Learning All The Time

Roy Hodgson acknowledged there were 'some very good things' to take out of Ross Barkley's performance in England's 2-2 draw against Ecuador.

Barkley's skilful burst forward on 51 minutes contributed towards Rickie Lambert scoring England's second goal in Miami.

The post-match statistics showed that Barkley, who played 84 minutes of England's penultimate pre-World Cup friendly, embarked on seven dribbles forward and had a 91 per cent pass completion rate.

"There were some very good things," replied Hodgson when quizzed on Barkley's display. "He's an exciting talent as we know."

It was Barkley's fifth appearance for the Three Lions but his first start.

And Hodgson accepts that the Everton man is continuing to adjust to international football.

The England boss added: "There were moments when he could have made better decisions on when to turn and when to keep the ball but that's understandable. We know that and that's what we work with him on.

"But the one thing we can certainly state is that he came into the game on his first start for England as a 20-year-old.

"He's going to get a lot of good press and I am pleased for him in that respect."

With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain suffering suspected knee ligament damage in the friendly, extra responsibility could now be placed on Barkley at the World Cup if the Arsenal attacker is ruled out of events in Brazil.

Ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle, who was a pundit for ITV's coverage of the game, feels that the youngster is capable of taking his club form on to the biggest stage.

“I think he [Barkley] has got a really bright future,” said Hoddle who represented England at the World Cups of 1982 and 1986. “How he has developed under Martinez, the next three or four years are going to be key.

“When you have players like him and [Adam] Lallana that excites me.

“If you get the right shape and the right balance in midfield, I think this kid could go on and be a major force for England.

“He looks quite relaxed – he looks as though he is playing for England as he does his club side and that's really good for a youngster. That's the key to international football.”
