Boss Lauds Ossie Leadership

by Daniel Alston @efc_danalston

Roberto Martinez believes Leon Osman's goal at Newcastle was a fitting reward for the stand-in skipper's performance.

Taking the armband once again in the absence of Phil Jagielka, Osman capped a commanding display in midfield with a fine strike to seal a 3-0 win at St. James' Park.

And while hailing the team's manner of victory, Martinez reserved special praise for the long-serving Blue.

He told evertontv: "Leon was a true captain, a leader. He brings a real understanding of what's needed in the game.

"He got himself in real awkward spaces for Newcastle to pick him up and that opens up space higher up the pitch.

"He was very influential in that respect and his workrate was rewarded at the end with a sensational finish.

"That's Leon; leadership, knowhow of the game and being a real star with everything he does.

"It was a very good performance within the context because I feel it was a phenomenal effort as a team."
