Martinez: Safety Comes First

@Everton

Roberto Martinez says he was fully behind the decision to postpone Wednesday evening’s Premier League game against Crystal Palace.

Adverse weather conditions hit Merseyside in the lead-up to kick-off and the Club took the decision to call the game off due to damage to buildings surrounding the stadium and safety concerns for spectators visiting Goodison Park.

Martinez told evertontv: “You do . It’s the safety of the fans coming to the ground. Because of the wind there has been a lot of building damage and the last thing we want is for any of the fans to get put in a position that is dangerous.

“It is disappointing because we were ready to go out and warm up. The preparation was there for both teams and you get the anti-climax. But as everyone has seen it has been called off and rightly so.”

Everton’s contest with the Eagles will now be rescheduled for a later date. Match tickets for the postponed fixture will remain valid for the rearranged game.

And with the Blues aiming to progress in the FA Cup against Swansea this weekend, it could result in a heavy load of fixtures further in the season.

But Martinez believes his squad is strong enough to cope, should there be a fixture pile-up.

“Once you get the game called off for the right reasons then you need to adapt to it,” added the Spaniard. “Looking at the squad I think we are capable of coping with a big amount of fixtures.

“If you want to have the mentality of a big team you have to be able to cope with a lot of games from the period of February until the end of the season.”
