Aiden McGeady has promised Evertonians they will soon see the very best of his ability. The former Celtic winger has been eased back into the British game by boss Roberto Martinez since completing his move from Spartak Moscow last month. He made his first league start for the Blues against Aston Villa at the weekend, following an outing at Stevenage in the FA Cup and cameo roles from the bench in the previous top-flight matches away at West Bromwich Albion and Liverpool. The Republic of Ireland winger showed flashes of his quality on his Goodison bow, notably in the opening few minutes when he saw a curling left-foot shot beat Brad Guzan before rebounding back off the post.He eventually managed 87 minutes before he was replaced in the final stages by Tony Hibbert. It was another step towards full fitness for the 27-year-old, who is optimistic he will soon be exciting fans with the skills that made him such a popular figure on the terraces at Celtic Park.“I was obviously a little bit apprehensive at the start, a little bit nervous,” McGeady told evertontv. “In the first half I thought I did okay and the second half I probably let myself down a couple of times. But I kept going to the end and I’m just happy that we won. “It was a great first game for me – not because I played great, because I didn’t – but because the team ultimately won and that’s the main thing.“There were a few little things I was disappointed with. If I was on my game I know I wouldn’t have done those things, but I can’t be too harsh on myself because I need to bide my time and be patient. Hopefully in the coming months I can get up to full speed.”McGeady moved to Goodison three weeks ago and watched on from the stands as Everton brushed aside Norwich City 2-0.That day also saw Kevin Mirallas score an expertly-taken free-kick in front of the Gwladys Street, similar to the effort that saw off Villa on Saturday. And McGeady added: “ was a fantastic free-kick. He’s scoring free-kicks like that with every chance he gets at the moment. “We kept plugging away and in the end we got our rewards. For the final 20 minutes we were pressing and we got two goals. To come from 1-0 down and win 2-1 is obviously very pleasing.”Watch McGeady and his Everton teammates face Crystal Palace in the next game at Goodison on Wednesday 12 February. To buy, click here or call 0871 663 1878*.
