Aiden McGeady is keen to deliver for a manager who has shown so much belief in him.

Roberto Martinez is a long-time admirer of the Irish international, who was signed by the Blues from Spartak Moscow for an undisclosed fee last week.

That eagerness to secure his signature has given the 27-year-old added impetus to deliver for the man at the Goodison helm.

He told evertonfc.com: "Roberto has been quite vocal that he has been after me for a while - before, when he was manager of Wigan as well. It is good to know that the manager likes me so much as a player. That was a big pull for me and the way he sets his team up should hopefully get the best out of me as well.

"I was close to going to Wigan but at the time I was injured and there were a couple of little things we couldn't get ironed out. But it is one of those things and it has worked out for the best I think.

"It is a big compliment, the fact he has been after me for a while. But the hard work for me starts now. I need to get myself fit and try to get myself in the team. Obviously, there is big competition for places so we will see what happens.

"This is something I've wanted for a long time - the chance to play in the Premier League. And obviously the chance to come to a massive club like this with a fantastic manager was just too good to turn down."

McGeady had the benefit of joining Everton's squad on their training break to Tenerife this week.

It has allowed him to hit the ground running as he seeks to get back to full fitness after a break from football during Russia's mid-season break.

He added: "The Tenerife trip is something I needed. The first day was difficult, getting back into it, but the days after that were great. All the manager's training sessions are based on football, which is refreshing for me.

"I've only trained for three or four days and not played since November. I got to know the boys while I was away this week and got some training and had my first touch of a ball. I'm not 100 per cent just yet, but if the manager thinks I can offer something then I will try to do everything I can."

McGeady is in contention for a place in the squad for Monday's trip to West Bromwich Albion.

His first taste of Goodison action is likely to come against Aston Villa on February 1. For ticket details, click here . To book hospitality for the fixture, click here .
