Everton’s midfielders are the talk of Thursday’s newspapers, with Ross Barkley, Gareth Barry and James McCarthy all mentioned.

Locally, Barkley has been speaking in the Liverpool Echo about how he always knew this would be a breakthrough season.

The 20-year-old felt that he would be given an opportunity to showcase his talents once he discovered Roberto Martinez would be taking up the managerial reins at Goodison Park in the summer.

In the Liverpool Post, Martinez has been lauding the performances of Gareth Barry and explains how he believes his loan signing will be crucial if Everton are to make an assault on the Premier League’s European qualification places.

The Blues' Spanish boss has also been praising the partnership Barry has built up with McCarthy in today’s issue of the Daily Mirror.

Elsewhere, the Daily Telegraph claim that Barkley could be offered a new improved deal at Goodison, while the Daily Star features quotes from Leighton Baines, who is targeting a return to action in Everton’s festive fixtures.
